The other day I saw a bumper sticker on a car. It had the Christian fish symbol with the word “Darwin” in it. There was a time when I thought this was both original and funny. I understood the message. A bumper sticker is a pretty serious commitment to an idea, especially when it is glued to your automobile.
Here is my issue with this particular bumper sticker. It makes the assumption that Christians don’t believe in the theory of evolution, or science. Perhaps it is my assumption but that implies that Christians are biblical literalists and that all Christians might be lumped together in the idea that we believe the Bible is the inerrant Word of God.
Here’s the thing–not all Christians believe that God created the world –in 6- 24 hour periods, and on the 7th took a much deserved nap! The Bible itself is a little unclear about the creation of humankind. There are many many Christians who embrace science as there are many scientists who are Christians. Yes, there are Christians who have no use for science.
The thought occurred to me, ‘Who would put a sticker like that on their car?’ I can only imagine that it is someone who is not very happy with Christians or the church. The church is not perfect, and I have yet to meet a Christian that is perfect. The church is made up of fallible people. Probably too often we fall short of being model human beings.
The church; however, has the potential to do tremendous good–and there are countless churches out there who are organized for good. In every community out there- there are mission and outreach groups from churches who are helping to meet the needs of those who are struggling. Often when the government cuts a program- the church is called upon. When a large (or small) business is shut down in a community–the local church is called upon. When the members of a community are struggling with grief, anxiety, addiction, shelter, or even sanctuary–local churches are called upon. Community members use the church space for a variety of events. We are here for the community.
I would encourage everyone with a “Darwin” bumper sticker to experiment and use that great scientific mind to visit and explore a few Christian churches. Sure, there may be some that you don’t agree with the teaching- but there may one that piques your curiosity. Hopefully, you find a community of other similar minded folk who want to share their gifts, thoughts, opinions, and compassion for all of Earth’s creatures.
Darwin-fish bumper sticker person–if you are actually reading this–thank you. I really do appreciate your consideration.
