We have all heard the expression, “A penny for your thoughts.” Well, let me give you my two cents on that cliche. Do you see what I just did?
A penny for your thoughts. Let me give you my two cents.
Is it possible that my opinion is worth twice as much as your opinion?
This is kind of a problem. This is a big problem in the world today.
These are some of the ways I see it playing out…
We live in a ‘look at me’ culture. How many times have you seen young/older people taking selfies? Facebook has allowed us to create our own profiles and share with the world what we want the world to see. Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat do the same. Of course, there are other social media outlets that allow us the same opportunity.
Blogs are another look at me kind of thing. Anyone can do this–I am touched that anyone would care enough about what I have to say that they would take the time to read the thoughts I put out there.
It also plays out with politics. Everyone wants the most for the minimum. We would all love to pay less taxes but receive more services. We want money and services for our veterans. We want a vital and strong educational system. We want affordable health care. We want good roads, clean energy, etc, etc. We want all of this and more and we don’t really want to pay more than our fair share.
The next piece, if my opinion is worth twice as much as yours, is that the higher valued opinion must be right. Often my opinion is wrong–or to be honest–it’s just an opinion.
The church worship service is a strange (but powerful) thing. We do it all to worship and give glory to God. There are these little performances throughout the hour. A group of people gather together and sing for the others. A pastor gets behind a box and shares his/her thoughts on a passage from the Bible. During the time of prayer we wonder if our prayers are good enough, or if we’re good enough. We even join together to sign a few songs. In a strange way it is our two cents longing for a penny for God’s thoughts.
That is the final piece–Are we more than willing to give God our two cents- but only willing to offer a penny back for God’s thoughts? Maybe we’re just not ready to hear God’s two cents.
Thanks for giving me an opportunity to share my two cents.
