What is an Installation?
So, you may have heard that I am going to be “installed” as the 28th pastor of the First Congregational Church of Lebanon. An Installation is a worship service and a celebration. The service is an opportunity for the local: church, Association, Conference and pastor to acknowledge that it is engaging in a mutual ministry. It is something our church hasn’t done in 30 years! (28 settled ministers in over 300 years, and the fact that the church hasn’t hosted an Installation in 30 years speaks volumes to the health and stability of our congregation!)
From the UCC Book of Worship: “In this order the association, at the request of a local church, confirms and celebrates the covenant between a local church and a newly called pastor and teacher and reaffirms the covenantal relationship of all the churches in the association.”
What it really means: We are going to have a worship service that celebrates the whole ministry of our church! We are going to invite the other churches of the New London Association, Lebanon, and our community friends. Actually, everyone is invited and welcome. This isn’t a party for ME- this is an acknowledgement that WE are in this together—our mutual ministry!
As this congregation knows better than most, the search for a new pastor is no easy task. A committee will pour over an amazing amount of profiles, and try to determine who might be the best fit. The journey a congregation undertakes can be filled with conflict or rejection (for the candidates as well). Many things have to go right. Profiles have to be completed with transparency and honesty. Communication and trust are paramount. Eventually the Search Committee lands on a few choices, and with prayer, luck and grace- the right candidate accepts the call.
What the church and the candidate are looking for is a ‘good fit,’ or perhaps more appropriate, ‘a perfect match.’ When this happens—it is worth celebrating. I don’t want to dwell on the difficult journey this congregation took to arrive at this point- but I do think it is going to take more time to heal the wounds that are still open. I may not be the best pastor equipped for conflict resolution, but I am willing to work at this.
My hope for the Service of Installation planned for May 5, 3 pm (YOU ARE INVITED!) is that everyone will attend and have a good time. I am not treating this as another worship service, but a service of celebration! I want to honor past ministry and bless the ministry of our future. It is my hope that we can share a few prayers, a few songs, and a few laughs. I want the service to be a reflection of the things that brought me to this congregation and a glimpse into the amazing ministry that we can achieve together.
It was a journey to get to this point. This Service honors and celebrates the entire journey. We can honor the heartache, hard work and dedication of every dedicated member of our church and celebrate how far we have come, and re-covenant to build our community for the gracious and meaningful ministry ahead.
Grace and Peace to you-
Rev. Will
